Vanessa E. Hicks, a native of Lunenburg County, Virginia is the newest Associate in the firm’s criminal practice group. She has been a criminal defense attorney for over twenty-seven years. She is dedicated to protecting the rights of her clients and believes that everyone is entitled to the best defense possible. Vanessa’s practice is mainly in The Gee Law Firm’s Emporia office but she travels throughout Southside Virginia serving our clients.
Vanessa is a 1982 graduate of Central of Lunenburg in Victoria, Virginia. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from the College of William and Mary in 1986 and a Juris Doctorate from Washington and Lee School of Law in 1989. While in law school, she participated in the Alderson Women’s Prison Clinic and was a member of the Mock Trial Team. After two years in private practice, Vanessa became an Assistant Public Defender in Lynchburg, VA. She ended her career in state employment as the Chief Public Defender for Arlington County in December 2009. Prior to joining The Gee Law Firm, she was employed for over six years as Of Counsel, Criminal Division for Price Benowitz, P.C. of Washington, DC and was responsible for running the South Hill, Virginia office.
Vanessa is also an ordained Elder in the AME Zion Church and is currently serving as pastor of the Mt. Zion A.M.E.Z. Church in Dundas, Virginia. She is a May 2017 graduate of the Samuel D. Proctor School of Theology of Virginia Union University in Richmond, VA having received a Master of Divinity.
When not in court or church, Vanessa enjoys music, movies, playing chess, word games, Bid Whist and bowling.
